I enjoyed our short chat too, Donna, and I'm looking forward to continuing our conversation about FOSS and libraries too. And yes, I'm thinking of submitting a paper for LCA 2011, now that I know what it's like.

Hey Brenda,

Lovely to meet you at LCA, albeit briefly. I'm looking forward to continuing our dialogue about FOSS for Libraries.

I think it's safe to say, LCA has grown to accommodate geeks of all kinds... I certainly hope you are a convert! As for wondering if you should go... of course you should! You should even consider submitting a paper to the conference!!! :)

Welcome. ;)

Thanks for this, Brianna. No, I didn't go to the Girl Geek Dinner, because I had an opportunity to meet Glyn Moody that night, but I'd certainly consider going in the future. And I'll definitely take up your suggestion of joining the NZ LinuxChix maling list.

Another convert... perhaps? :)

This was my third LCA and definitely the one I have felt the most comfortable at. Because there are so many people that go repeatedly, I have had a chance to meet a few of them by now and so it's easier to spot one, two, lots of people I'm at least acquaintances with, in any given crowd. I didn't have any more "whoa, wall of MAN" experiences this year, which I did the first time around.

Did you come to the Girl Geek Dinner? Do you know about the NZ LinuxChix mailing list? I see that you've said you don't identify as a 'hacker', but there is some great support in the LinuxChix groups if you feel like indulging or exploring your techie side.

Thanks for this, MJ, and for adding a perspective on the cooperative development tradition. I'm not very familiar with it, and look forward to learning more about it.

Thanks for the links back to earlier statements of freedom. I'd not seen those before.

I should probably write something about the SirsiDynix debacle on my site now that the dust has settled and I'll probably link to this.

Myself, I see free software as part of an even older tradition - the cooperative development tradition dating back to the mid-1800s. As well as working for a Koha support cooperative since 2002, I'm also a member of another co-op which traces its roots back to the Rochdale pioneers.

Back on topic: although we're based in England and Spain, we've worked around the world.

Mark, when I was first interested in this area, I didn't think that the difference between 'free' and 'open' was that important, but my thinking has changed over the years. I now have a much better appreciation of the importance of the philosophy behind the free software movement, and that's one of the reasons I wrote this.

Very well said, Brenda. I'm moving more to the 'free' position, I think. The philosophy is as important as the source code and the terms frame the debate.

Thanks for this, Don. It's definitely worth noting that people who choose to use Koha have a range of support options, with support organisations based not only in the U.S., but also Australia , New Zealand (as you say), France, India, South Africa, Pakistan, and the U.K. There is a list at http://koha.org/support/pay-for-support for anyone who's interested in contact details.

Brenda

As you know, I 100% agree with the above. Worth noting as well that in addition to the companies you list above there are two NZ companies who support Koha which is a Gnu GPL licenced library system used across the globe.

The companies are Katipo, who orginally developed Koha way back in 1999 and my own company Catalyst IT who have some of the original Koha team working on our staff.
